THE SCOTSMAN NAME US AS ONE OF THEIR BANDS OF 2011
The Scotsman’s Under The Radar website which covers Scottish and UK music (with impeccable taste we think) has named us as one of their bands of 2011. Bands of 2011: The Little Kicks Difficult second album? Not on this evidence. 2011 has turned out to be quite a year for Aberdeen-based four-piece The Little Kicks. Glowing accolades from the likes of Radio Scotland’s Vic Galloway, a cracking Radio Clyde session with Jim Gellatly and a 7/10 review in the NME have all contributed to a late flurry of praise since the release of their self-titled album in late November. The new record sits somewhere between the unashamed indie pop of their first album - 2009’s Boxing Clever - and the more moody, introspective tone of frontman Steven Milne’s 2010 solo album Chasing Phantoms. The result is a weightier collection of songs which blazes through its 32 minute running time in a flash, and begs for you to hit repeat. Add to that a frenetic touring schedule and some great performances during the festival season, and 2011 has really been the year it all came together, with the band achieving something no North East act has managed in recent years - genuine mainstream appeal not just in the central belt, but all across the UK.
